Joey Raccuia, a freshman baseball player at Radford University, tragically died in a single-vehicle accident on Wednesday, February 25, in Radford. He was 19 years old. Joey, the son of former Radford University head baseball coach Joe Raccuia, had been with the university’s baseball team as a middle infielder. Before attending Radford University, he played baseball at Radford High School and studied at the PDG Academy in Fredericksburg.
The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. on East Street, when the Radford Police Department responded to a report of the crash. Upon arrival, emergency responders provided aid, but Joey, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released further details, as the investigation is ongoing.
The news of Joey’s death has left the Radford University community in mourning. His father, Joe, served as the head coach of the university’s baseball team for 12 seasons before resigning. Joey’s untimely death has raised questions about the status of Radford University’s scheduled baseball games, which were set to begin on Friday. A decision regarding whether those games will continue as planned has yet to be made.
